ABOUT

Compunet (also known as CNet) was operated by Compunet Teleservices Ltd and developed by Ariadne Software. Users connected via a custom 1200/75 baud modem (the "brick") that plugged into the C64's cartridge port.

The service featured a tree-structured content system, electronic mail ("Courier"), telesoftware downloads, a page editor, and the iconic horizontally-scrolling "duckshoot" menu system.

WHAT WE'RE RECREATING

Compunet Reborn reverse-engineers the original X.25-derived protocol from the ROM and terminal software. The server reimplements the protocol in Python, allowing a real (or emulated) C64 to connect over TCP as if it were 1987 again.

The original modem registers are swapped for 6551 ACIA (SwiftLink) equivalents, and TCP provides the reliable transport that the phone line couldn't.
